Errington moss removal

Errington Moss Removal for Roofs at the Edge of the Forest

On an Errington lot the moss follows the tree line. We clear the shaded strip by hand, soft wash lichen off the sunny side and tidy the windows that face the woods.

Errington is a rural residential and farming community a short drive south-west of Parksville, governed as part of Electoral Area F by the Regional District of Nanaimo, with Englishman River Falls Provincial Park on its doorstep. Most houses here sit in an opening someone made in second-growth forest, and that clearing explains nearly everything about where the moss turns up. The middle of a clearing gets open sky. Its edges get shade, drip and a steady rain of needles.

Moss grows in bands on a forest lot

Look up at the roof from an Errington yard and the green is rarely spread evenly. It runs as a band along whichever eave sits closest to the tree line, widest beneath the branches that reach out over the house. Rain caught by those branches keeps dripping onto the same strip of shingles long after the shower has passed. Needles land there first and stay put. A few metres up the slope, where the canopy ends, the roofing may be close to bare.

That pattern shapes how we plan and price. A roof with one heavy band and three light faces is a smaller job than a roof that is green from ridge to eave, and we quote what is actually up there. The band is lifted off by hand using plastic scrapers and brushes, worked downslope, and we sweep the lighter faces too, so loose spores and litter do not simply restart the band next winter. The hand method is set out on our roof moss removal page.

How it works

How Booking Your Roof Works

Four steps, and only the first one needs anything from you. Describe the roof, approve the price, and stay on solid ground while we work.

1

Describe the roof

Two minutes on the phone or the form.

The address, how many storeys, the roofing material if you know it, and roughly how green it looks from the yard. Mention any big trees nearby.

2

Approve the price

Every quote is worked out for one roof.

Steepness, height, material, the depth of the moss and how we reach each slope set the figure. It is free, and you have it in hand before any work begins.

3

The moss comes off

Our crew handles the climbing.

Scrapers and brushes take the moss off the courses, a treatment goes on if it will help, and the bagged moss leaves in our truck. If washing is needed, it is a low-pressure soft wash; asphalt shingles and cedar shakes never see high pressure.

4

Hear what we saw

Nothing up there stays a mystery.

A curled tab, a split shake, bare patches where granules have gone, or flashing pulling loose: we tell you where it is, and the next step is up to you.

Done.

  • You describe the roof.
  • You approve a free quote.
  • We clear the moss.
  • The ladder stays in our truck, not your garage.

Want the green gone from your roof? Ask for a free quote and leave the climbing to our crew.

Moss and fallen needles thick across a shaded shingle roof around the skylights

Lichen in the middle of the clearing

The sunny face of the same roof usually has a different complaint. Grey and pale green lichen crusts, and dark streaks running down from the ridge, grow on slopes that dry quickly. Lichen grips hard, and scraping at it would take shingle granules along with it. Those faces get a roof cleaning instead: a low-pressure soft wash that lifts the growth without stripping the surface. Asphalt shingles and cedar shakes never get high pressure from us.

Skylights, sills and the wall facing the woods

On a forest lot, moss does not stop at the shingles. A skylight on a shaded slope catches needles against its uphill curb, and moss rooted there sits right against the flashing. Lower down, the wall that faces the trees keeps its window frames damp all through the wet months, and moss settles into sliding tracks and along the bottom of wooden sills. We clear those with hand tools and soft brushes as part of window moss removal, and it fits into the same visit as the roof.

Roofs nobody has been up on in years

Many homes out here have gone a long stretch without anyone on the roof. Land, animals and outbuildings keep owners busy, and a roof that is not leaking is easy to put off. By the time we get the call, the moss can be thick enough to hide what lies under it. On those roofs we clear a section, check the shingles or shakes beneath, and report before going on. Paying to clean a roof that is due for replacement helps nobody. Our asphalt shingle and cedar shake pages go further into older roofing.

Why choose us

Why choose us for moss removal in Errington

Priced slope by slope

Each face of the roof is judged on its own, so a roof with one green strip is not quoted as if it were green all over.

Hand tools on the roofing

Shingles and shakes are cleared by hand with scrapers and soft brushes. A low-pressure soft wash is our standard; higher pressure only for tasks that call for it, such as a concrete pad.

Told before we carry on

If the roofing under a thick mat turns out to be worn through, we stop and say so before the job goes any further.

Insured, WCB, guaranteed

Locally owned and operated, insured and WCB-registered. If anything is not right, we come back and make it right.

Concrete in the shade

A concrete pad by the back door, a paver path to the shop or the apron in front of a garage stays wet all winter under the trees, and a film of moss makes it slick. Concrete is a surface where higher pressure can be used, in the spots where the growth and the grime under it call for it. Our driveway and sidewalk moss removal page has the details.

Asking for a quote

Send the address through our contact form, along with which side of the house faces the trees and a photo of the greenest part of the roof if you have one. Mention gates and any loose animals so we can plan the visit. The quote is free, and we also cover neighbouring Coombs and Hilliers.

Got questions?

Errington moss removal FAQ

Our roof is only green along the edge nearest the trees. Can you clear just that strip?

Yes. If the rest of the roof is in decent shape, we can quote the strip on its own. We still walk the whole roof first and mention anything else we notice, such as needles banked behind a vent or a valley starting to fill, so you can decide whether to add it.

Will taking the moss off stop our roof from leaking?

Not on its own. Moss can lift shingle edges and hold water where it should not sit, but a leak usually comes from a failed shingle, worn flashing or a gap around a pipe or chimney. We are not roofers and we do not do repairs. What we can do is point out any lifted, cracked or missing pieces we see once the moss is off, so a roofer knows exactly where to start.

Which months suit a moss visit out here?

Clearing can happen through much of the year, as long as the roof is dry enough to stand on safely. Frost or a soaked surface pushes the day back. A treatment is different: it needs dry weather after it goes on, so we put it in the calendar between late spring and early fall. If you want both, the roof can be cleared first and treated once a dry spell comes along.

Is a zinc strip worth it on a roof under trees?

It helps less than most people hope. A zinc strip works when rain runs over it and carries a trace of zinc down the slope below. Where needles blanket the shingles, very little of that reaches the moss, and a strip up at the ridge does not do much for a band of growth along the eave. Keeping litter off the roof and letting more light reach the eave usually count for more. Our moss treatment and prevention page compares them.

Do you trim the branches that hang over the roof?

No. Tree work belongs with an arborist, particularly with tall fir or cedar close to a house or a service line. While we are up top, we can show you which limbs drip onto the mossiest strip or drop the most needles, so you know which ones are worth asking about.
