Before and after
One roof, before and after
Both photos in a set come from the same position, taken as we arrive and again once the moss and debris have been cleared away.

Coombs sits at a crossroads on Highway 4A, a short drive inland from Parksville, and its best-known roof is the sod one at the market, where goats graze on the grass above the shoppers. That roof is supposed to be green. It was built to carry soil and plants. The shingles on your house were built for the opposite job, and that difference is the whole case for getting moss off them.
A shingle roof is meant to shed water
Asphalt shingles and cedar shakes keep rain out by overlap. Each course laps over the one below it, water runs down the face, and the surface dries out between showers. Moss breaks that arrangement in a few quiet ways. A cushion sitting along the bottom edge of a course works like a sponge, so the shingle under it stays wet for days instead of hours. Its fine root threads creep into the gap beneath the tab and prop it up, and a raised tab lets wind-driven rain slip sideways under the lap. On cedar, moss packs the keyways between shakes, the wood never gets a chance to dry, and the butt ends go soft.
None of this happens in one winter, and moss is a maintenance job, not a reason to panic. A roof that carries moss year after year simply wears out sooner than one kept clear.
Our asphalt shingle roofs page lists what you can check from the ground. If something there sounds familiar, have us take a closer look. We would sooner tell you a roof can wait another season than book a visit it does not need.
How it works
How Booking Your Roof Works
Four steps, and only the first one needs anything from you. Describe the roof, approve the price, and stay on solid ground while we work.
Describe the roof
Two minutes on the phone or the form.
The address, how many storeys, the roofing material if you know it, and roughly how green it looks from the yard. Mention any big trees nearby.
Approve the price
Every quote is worked out for one roof.
Steepness, height, material, the depth of the moss and how we reach each slope set the figure. It is free, and you have it in hand before any work begins.
The moss comes off
Our crew handles the climbing.
Scrapers and brushes take the moss off the courses, a treatment goes on if it will help, and the bagged moss leaves in our truck. If washing is needed, it is a low-pressure soft wash; asphalt shingles and cedar shakes never see high pressure.
Hear what we saw
Nothing up there stays a mystery.
A curled tab, a split shake, bare patches where granules have gone, or flashing pulling loose: we tell you where it is, and the next step is up to you.
Done.
- You describe the roof.
- You approve a free quote.
- We clear the moss.
- The ladder stays in our truck, not your garage.
Want the green gone from your roof? Ask for a free quote and leave the climbing to our crew.

How we take it off
On the roof, the work is done by hand. We lift the moss with plastic scrapers and soft brushes, working down the slope so nothing gets pushed up under a lap, and we bag it as we go rather than raking it onto the lawn, a vegetable bed or a paddock. Where a roof needs washing, a low-pressure soft wash is our standard, and we never put high pressure on asphalt shingles or cedar shakes. Higher pressure is kept for jobs on the ground that call for it, like a concrete driveway, a shop apron or a walkway gone slick. More on both: roof moss removal and driveway and sidewalk moss removal.
Moss that has slid into the gutter over the year, or drops in while we work, is scooped out of the trough before we pack up.
Why choose us
Why choose us for moss removal in Coombs
Hand work up top
Plastic scrapers and soft brushes on shingles and shakes. A low-pressure soft wash is standard, and high pressure never goes near your roof.
Every building quoted on its own
House, shop and outbuildings are listed separately, so you decide which roofs are worth doing this year.
Animals and feed kept clear
Treatment stays on the roof and away from coops, runs and water troughs, and it can be left off a barn or coop altogether.
Insured, WCB-registered, guaranteed
Our crew is insured and registered with WCB. Spot a patch we missed and we come back and make it right.
Shops and village buildings
Coombs is not only houses. Shops and businesses line the highway through the village, and their roofs face the same wet winters as everyone else’s. A building you work from or rent out can be quoted on its own, with access planned around tenants or opening hours. Our commercial and strata roofs page explains how that kind of job is set up.

Keeping the gap long
Moss comes back. What you can change is how long it takes. After a clean, a treatment put down in a dry stretch slows the next round, and a zinc strip along the ridge helps on a simple roof. The bigger lever is usually debris: whatever lands on the shingles and stays there becomes the bed for next year’s growth, so trimming a limb that hangs over the eaves can matter as much as anything we apply. Our moss treatment and prevention page sets out the options.
To book a look, send your address, the roofs and paths you want cleared, and a note about gates, dogs or livestock through our contact page. We will come out and send a free quote. We also work the roads out to Hilliers and Errington.
Got questions?
Coombs moss removal FAQ
We have a planted roof on a shed, like the one at the market. Will you clear that too?
No. A sod or planted roof is built to hold soil and grow, and scraping it would undo the whole point of it. Its upkeep belongs with whoever built it. What we can do is clear the moss off the ordinary shingle, shake or metal roofs on the same property, and keep any treatment well away from the planted one.
We keep chickens and a horse close to the house. How do you handle treatment?
Tell us about the animals when you ask for a quote. Before any treatment we go over what we would use and where it goes, apply it in a controlled line on the roof only, and keep it away from feed, water troughs and runs. On a coop or a stable roof we can leave the treatment off altogether, since the hand removal does not depend on it. It also helps to keep animals back from the drip line until the roof has dried.
Can you clear the house and a shop or business building on the same trip?
Yes. List every building you want looked at and each one gets its own line on the quote, so you can choose what gets done now and what waits. Doing them on one visit saves you a second call-out, and the moss from all of them leaves in the same load.
Someone pressure-washed our roof a few years ago. Can you undo the damage?
No. Granules blasted off asphalt shingles do not grow back, and fibres torn out of cedar shakes stay gone. What we can do is clear the current moss gently, by hand and with a low-pressure soft wash where it is needed, and tell you honestly how worn the surface looks. If the roof is near the end of its life, you will hear that from us before you spend money on moss work.
Our place is up a long gravel lane. Is that a problem?
Not usually. Let us know roughly how long the lane is, whether there are gates, tight turns or low branches on the way in, and where we can park near the house. We bring ladders, brushes and bags in the truck, so all we need is somewhere to pull in and a clear path to each roof.
